What’s inside this week’s Footy Fix?…

  • Clint Dempsey spoke about the U.S.’s pay to play system.

  • Even Diego Luna’s tattoos show his mentality.

  • Marcelo Balboa tells USMNT players to shut off the noise.

  • Tim Weah recreated his father’s magazine cover.

  • Thomas Dooley is the new Guyana coach.

  • Freddy Adu sees himself in Gio Reyna.

Let’s break it all down!

Sky is the Limit, If You Have Right Eyes Watching You

Clint Dempsey on the U.S.’s Pay to Play System

Clint Dempsey’s family went into debt for his soccer fees, but he still made it because he had the right eyes watching him. He also gave an example of former USMNT teammate Jose Francisco Torres, who had no money but got a move to Mexico. Dempsey says things should be easier.

Our take on the situation: It’s great to see Dempsey calling out the Pay to Play system. Sure he made it along with Torres who had no money, but there are so many other talented players falling through because they don’t have eyes watching them. It needs to change.

“I am Terrified of Spiders”

Even Diego Luna’s Tattoos Show His Mentality

Diego Luna wants to keep pushing himself out of the comfort zone and challenge himself. Even his choice of tattoos shows his mentality. “I’m terrified of spiders. So I think getting a black widow on my throat, the thing you’re most scared of: put it on your throat, right there in front of you, so you look at it every day. That was my thought process behind it,” he said.

Our take on the situation: Luna is winning over fans on and off the pitch this year. He looks like he’s not afraid of challenges, so let’s hope he takes the next step and move to Europe so he can develop more.

“I Remember People Telling Me that I was an Asshole, I was the Worst Player, I was Rambo.”

Marcelo Balboa Tells Current USMNT Players to Shut Off the Noise

Marcelo Balboa heard it all back in 1994, from the media calling him Rambo to assistant coaches telling the head coach to cut him. So he tells the USMNT players to shut off the noise and grind, like he did.

Our take on the situation: Balboa is a legend for the USMNT. He was a rock in the back and he went on to have a great 1994 World Cup, despite all the noise. If the current players have his mentality, they will surely go places.

Like Father, Like Son

Tim Weah Recreates His Father’s Magazine Cover

Back in 2000, George Weah signed for Marseille and there was a really cool magazine cover of him. So 25 years later, when his son Tim Weah signed for them, he recreated the same cover. And it looks fantastic.

Our take on the situation: This is a great decision for Weah to move to France with Marseille. He will surely get more minutes and hopefully can show off his talent there. He is already winning over fans with this magazine cover.

New Adventure for Thomas Dooley

Former USMNT Captain Thomas Dooley is the New Coach for Guyana

Thomas Dooley was one of the best to play for the USMNT. Now as a coach, he’s had some interesting spells in places like the Philippines, Vietnam, and Malaysia. He is ready for a new adventure in Guyana, we will be seeing him in CONCACAF matches.

Our take on the situation: Guyana may be more known for cricket but soccer is becoming more and more popular. They also have some interesting dual nationals in Europe. Let’s see what Dooley can do with this squad.

“That was My Story, Man”

Freddy Adu Sees Himself in Gio Reyna

Freddy Adu was once one of the biggest young talents in the world, but failed to live up to his potential. He sees what’s happening with Gio Reyna, he sees himself in him, so he is warning him not to repeat the same mistakes.

Our take on the situation: What happened to Adu was tragic. He was too young when a lot of pressure was put onto him and he didn’t have the right people to give him advice. Reyna has his father who was once the USMNT captain so hopefully they can sort it out.
